Summary of Our Visit to the Swedish Photographers Historic Exhibit
We are thrilled to share the exciting details of our recent trip to Sinte Gleska University and the surrounding areas. The journey provided our students with a wonderful opportunity to connect with the rich cultural heritage of the Sicangu Lakota community.
Our first stop was the Heritage Center, where students were captivated by the display of tribal wear and artwork. It was a great introduction to the traditions and history of the Lakota people. Afterward, we visited a local art sale, where community members and art students showcased their impressive creations, further deepening the students' appreciation for local art.
Next, we explored the Swedish Photographers Historic Exhibit, which features 75 stunning photographs from the collection “Rosebud Sioux – A Lakota People in Transition.” The exhibit, gifted to the Rosebud Sioux Tribe by Swedish photo-historian Claes-Hakan Jacobson’s widow, Eva Anderson, was both educational and inspiring. The students were excited to view the photographs and even recognized some last names shared by their peers, making the experience feel personal and special.
Our day concluded with a visit to St. Charles Church in Saint Francis, SD, where we admired the beautifully redone frescoes. The renovation was striking and left everyone in awe.
Overall, the trip was an enriching experience for both students and staff, offering valuable insights into local history, culture, and art. We are grateful for the opportunity to explore these important aspects of our community and look forward to future educational adventures.
